For several years, The Plural Association (TPA) worked toward launching the first Plural-led warmline. It was a project close to our hearts, born from a real and urgent need in the Plural community for accessible, knowledgeable peer support.
We’re sharing this update because this project is changing direction, and we want to be transparent about why.
After five years of fundraising and planning, we’ve learned that building a standalone warmline from scratch requires more sustained funding than we’ve been able to secure. Running one safely means having trained volunteers, licensed therapists on staff, and the infrastructure to operate responsibly. We were not willing to compromise on that standard, because the Plural community deserves better than a warmline that cannot adequately support the people who call. We’ve also seen too many warmlines launch and then shut down when funding runs out, leaving the people who relied on them without support. We did not want to start a service people depend on if we could not sustain it long term.
So rather than continuing to pursue a model that remains out of reach, we are redirecting this project toward a strategy we believe can create a bigger and more sustainable impact.
Our New Approach
TPA’s clinician competence training, including The Plural Competence Course, gives us a strong foundation to develop warmline training for established crisis lines and hotlines. Instead of building our own service from scratch, we are working toward equipping existing warmlines and crisis services to better understand and support Plural callers.
Over time, we hope to partner with organizations that can sustainably maintain Plural-informed warmline services. This approach means our expertise can reach more people through infrastructure that already exists, rather than duplicating what others have spent years building.
A Note to Our Supporters
If you donated toward the warmline, thank you. Your generosity reflected a shared belief that Plurals deserve better support, and that belief continues to drive everything TPA does. Funds donated toward the warmline have been used to support TPA’s peer support programs, including our community spaces, events, meetups, and scholarships that help Plurals connect with and support each other.
TPA remains fully community-funded and volunteer-led, only bringing in freelancers for larger projects or specialized tasks that fall outside what volunteers can do. Every donation and membership directly supports the programs, resources, and advocacy work that serve Plurals worldwide.
If you have questions, please reach out to us at contact@thepluralassociation.org.
Thank you for your trust, your support, and your continued belief in this movement.
